Win a daily prize plus an iPod touch® Grand Prize

We’re sure you’ll agree that summer’s the best. But we think vivaNext is the next best thing. How come? Because vivaNext will make it easier and faster for you to get to your favourite summer activities. Makes sense, huh?

To spread this great news, we’re running a contest called – you’ve guessed it – the Next Best Thing To Summer Contest. It starts today and runs through until July 31, 2009.
Each day, we’ll be giving away cool summer gear like water bottles, Canada’s Wonderland® passes, movie tickets, laptop bags and YRT\Viva two-zone passes. Then, at the very end, to top it all off, one lucky person will win the handy iPod touch® Grand prize, which will make it easy for him or her to get up-to-date vivaNext construction and project information wirelessly.

To enter, all you have to do is go to our website and use our interactive story to show us what your picture perfect summer looks like. It’s fun and it’s easy. You simply fill in the blanks of our story by choosing from a menu of drag-and-drop pictures. Each time you do, you’re guaranteed to giggle as each picture moves and makes a funny noise. For instance, if you choose theme parks as one of your favourite things to do in summer, when the picture is in the right spot, the roller coaster rides through a loop and the people in it scream.

But be sure to hurry because our Next Best Thing To Summer Contest ends July 31, 2009.

Good luck!

New online stop

I recently created this blog to serve as an informal way to give you a behind-the-scenes look and engage in the online conversation about vivaNext.

But you may not know that we also just launched a new website that is super sleek and easier to navigate.

I’m extremely proud of our former website, in fact it even won a Webby award, the leading international award honouring excellence on the Internet. But times change and technology evolves allowing us to share so much more information with you on our new website in a more creative way.

It’ll include the latest information on subway and rapidway progress, a section on how to get involved and details on who to contact with questions.

One of the coolest features is what we are calling a peak behind the construction wall. Here you can see what tunnel boring and station building looks like. We’ll also showcase our videos including time-lapse animation that will show you what the rapidways will look like and how they’ll fit into your community.

And of course, just like the previous website, there will be a game because we are always looking for ways to have fun.

Go ahead, tour our new online stop and let me know what you think.

Welcome to vivaNext

Welcome to the vivaBlog. I’m Dale Albers, Chief Communications Officer with York Region Rapid Transit Corporation. I could tell you we started this blog because my kids thought it would be cool, but that wouldn’t be accurate. Truth is, there are a lot of changes coming to Viva and not everyone has the time to come to public meetings to talk about it.

Don’t get me wrong, turnout at our public meetings has been amazing with hundreds of people in attendance. Even our webcasts attracted over 7,000 unique visitors.

But people don’t just write letters or e-mails anymore. They’re creating wikis, tweeting transit slowdowns, blogging about the Yonge Street Subway expansion and creating facebook groups to discuss how we can make vivaNext a better plan.

But here is the question. If you’re online talking about vivaNext, shouldn’t we be there to listen and participate in the discussion?

That’s what I hope this blog will do.

I’ll post two or three times a week and look forward to following the discussion and interjecting when I can. If you see a post or an article you’d like us to respond to, post it and we’ll chat. I’ll do my best to answer your questions as the vivaNext plan takes shape throughout York Region.

Tell your friends to get onboard and tell me what’s on your mind.

Introducing vivaNext

Getting from A to B in style is what you’ve come to expect from us. But more is on the way – we’ve been busy here at Viva central, creating the next generation of rapid transit. We’re calling it vivaNext.

It’s all about connections. Connecting you to the people you want to see and places you need to be. VivaNext will give you more transit options and help create attractive boulevards along the Viva routes.

Soon you’ll be able to get around faster, in style and with a smile. VivaNext will extend the Spadina and Yonge subway lines north, and build dedicated lanes for Viva on Highway 7, Yonge Street and Davis Drive.

So, what do you have to say about vivaNext? Share your thoughts here by posting a comment below.
