hydro pole installation on Bathurst at New Westminster

March 02, 2017

This Friday night, crews are continuing the installation of new 26-metre hydro poles along the west side of Bathurst Street at the New Westminster Drive intersection, which began last week. Please see below for further details.

work dates*: Friday, March 3 to Saturday, March 4, and over the next few weeks
work hours*: 9pm–3am

  • On Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning, northbound and southbound Bathurst St. will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • In addition, traffic will be shifted into the lanes on the east side of Bathurst, away from the work area.
  • As each new pole is hoisted up and over existing wires and placed on its foundation, traffic on Bathurst will be stopped in all directions for 10-15 minutes at a time.
  • The bus stop on the southwest corner of Bathurst and New Westminster Dr. will be closed from approximately 11:30pm to 3am.
  • To accommodate this work, there will be intermittent sidewalk closures on the west side of Bathurst St. between Westmount Boulevard and New Westminster, however, the sidewalk between Westmount Blvd. to Worth Blvd will be re-opened.
  • Where sidewalks or bus stops are closed around work areas, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk and bus stop.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be on site to direct traffic.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
  • Check out this video [of the vivaNext project on Yonge Street in Newmarket] at how it’s done.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible.

Starting next week, crews will be working on framing the poles and stringing the lines on Bathurst between Worth and Beverley Glen which may require short-term curb lane closures. After this stretch has been completed, crews will move to the next segment along Bathurst between Beverley Glen and Centre St. We will continue to communicate details as work progresses. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
