Spadina Extension

More family time. Study time. Workout time. Sleeping in time.
These are just some of the benefits the Spadina subway extension - with its direct access to York University and downtown Toronto - will bring to those who travel to and from Vaughan for school and work.
Extending from the Downsview Station in Toronto to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station in Vaughan, the Spadina subway extension will cover a total of 8.6 kilometres and include six stations.
To further enhance accessibility, some 2,900 new parking spaces will be built at three of these stations including 400 spaces at Finch West Station, 1,900 spaces at Steeles West Station and 600 spaces at Highway 407 Transitway Station.
Service frequency along the route will also help passengers save time on their commute. From Downsview Station to Steeles West Station, the planned train frequency is every two minutes. And from Steeles West Station to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station, it's every five minutes.
So how soon can you expect the Spadina subway extension to be completed and ready for service?
The project completion date is 2015. The $2.6 billion funding has been secured from all levels of government including $697 million from the Government of Canada, $870 million from the Province of Ontario, $352 million from York Region and $526 million from the City of Toronto.
In May 2008, a project office was opened and the engineering phase and preliminary construction got underway, as well as property surveys and acquisition. During the fall of 2009, preliminary station designs were unveiled for several of the Spadina subway extension stations at a series of public open houses, and the project took an important step forward with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Wilson Subway Yard.
