Spadina extension

Construction of the Spadina subway extension is currently underway. It will extend 8.6 kilometres north from Downsview Station in Toronto to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station at Highway 7 in Vaughan, and include six stations along its route.

In the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, mixed-use transit-oriented development is proposed along a tree-lined main street, including business offices, residences, entertainment and cultural facilities, as well as pedestrian shopping areas. It is expected to be the largest and most ambitious development project in the area’s history.

During the fall of 2009 and winter of 2010, preliminary subway station designs were unveiled at a series of public open houses. More detailed architectural concepts for all six stations will follow throughout 2010.

In December 2009, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to commemorate a link that will connect the Spadina subway extension to the existing Wilson Subway Yard and expanded yard storage facilities. Also, in 2009, a contract was awarded to build four tunnel-boring machines that will be used to construct the subway tunnels. Delivery of the first two machines is expected in the winter of 2010, with tunnel boring to begin in 2011.

Some 2,900 new parking spaces will be built at three of the new stations, including 400 spaces at Finch West Station, 1,900 spaces at Steeles West Station, and 600 spaces at Highway 407 Station.

The anticipated completion date for the Spadina subway extension is 2015.
