Rapidways

So what exactly are rapidways?
Often referred to as transitways or BRT, the term rapidways was coined by vivaNext to better convey their key benefit for riders: faster travel. Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road that allow Viva vehicles to avoid congestion and maintain faster, more consistent travel times. Travel time is further enhanced by transit signal priority that helps Viva vehicles stay on schedule.
New vivastations, specially designed for comfort, safety and convenience, will be built at each stop along the beautifully landscaped rapidways. Each vivastation will be easily accessed by signalized crosswalks and sidewalks. Click here to see what the vivastations look like.
Like the subway extensions and light rail transit lines, the rapidways will encourage the development of attractive and pedestrian-friendly places with a mix of uses along their routes where people will come to live, work, shop and play.
Currently, vivaNext is working on five rapidway projects in York Region:
- Davis Drive – Newmarket
- Highway 7 East – Markham/Richmond Hill
- Highway 7 – Vaughan
- Yonge Street – Richmond Hill
- Yonge Street – Newmarket
Each rapidway has its own construction schedule, with segments being developed in phases. Here’s the timing for each segment:
