Newmarket Chamber Of Commerce

Debra Scott has lived in Newmarket since 1983 and in that time has seen a lot of change.

But the vivaNext project will be one of the largest infrastructure projects that her town has ever seen. “Certainly there will be impacts, but this is a chance for us to redesign the look of Newmarket,” says Scott. It will be “rather exciting to walk out our front door and hop on viva.”

Not only is Scott a long-time resident of Newmarket, but she is also the president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. She works with over 700 members from all areas of business, acting as their voice. “My role is the messaging,” says Scott, who sees herself as the central point of contact. “Newmarket is a growing community and it is becoming the centre of northern York Region.”

This is a chance for us to redesign the look of Newmarket.

She said due to a lack of vacant land and the town being slated for intensification under the provincial plan, it will need to grow up instead of build out. “We are in the role of understanding that this (vivaNext) needs to happen,” she says. It is up to her to discuss the long-term benefits for the town with the members of the Chamber.

But Scott is not alone in this, vivaNext has appointed a community liaison, who will be working with Scott and all community members during the process. “It’s nice to see that vivaNext is listening and understanding,” she says. This project is bigger than others in the past and it is commendable for the Region to appoint a community liaison.
