Public transit ridership way up in York Region

York Region reports that Viva ridership has increased 26 per cent since launched in September 2005. From January to April 2011, overall ridership for both York Region Transit (YRT) and York Viva Bus Rapid Transit services increased 10.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2010. If this trend continues, YRT/Viva will surpass 21 million riders in 2011.

First Viva BRT station now open in York Region

Together with Metrolinx, The Regional Municipality of York is making progress on improving rapid transit with the opening of its first bus rapid transit (BRT) station (vivastation). Metrolinx and York Region deliver $250 million in rapid transit expansion

Metrolinx and The Regional Municipality of York announced today the award of nearly $250 million for two design/build contracts for early construction work on York Viva Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) dedicated rapidway lanes, part of York Region’s vivaNext rapid transit plan. The first contract is for work along Davis Drive in the Town of Newmarket, extending 2.6 kilometres from Yonge Street to Roxborough Road. The second contract is for the design and construction of a 7-kilometre rapidway along Highway 7 from Yonge Street to Warden Avenue at Enterprise Boulevard in Markham.

Government partnership celebrates unveiling of new Viva bus rapid transit vehicles for York Region

New vehicles for York Region’s Viva bus rapid transit (BRT) were unveiled today on a segment of newly constructed rapidway along Enterprise Drive in Markham, Ontario. Lois Brown, Member of Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora, along with Michael Chan, Member of Provincial Parliament for Markham-Unionville, York Region chairman and CEO Bill Fisch, and Metrolinx president and CEO Bruce McCuaig participated in the event. The existing Viva service connects Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Aurora and Newmarket, and also links to neighbouring regions of Toronto, Peel and Durham.

VivaNext advances in Newmarket – launches retrieval project with Habitat for Humanity York Region

Habitat for Humanity York Region joined officials today from Metrolinx, The Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Newmarket to recover materials from 21 buildings slated for demolition along Davis Drive in preparation for improvements along this busy corridor – including Viva rapid transit lanes (rapidways). This effort will help to ensure that at least 85 per cent of the building materials are recycled or reused and diverted from landfill.

Construction Resumes on Viva Rapid Transit Lanes

Metrolinx and York Region today announced the continuation of construction of the Viva rapid transit lanes (rapidways) along Enterprise Drive in Markham, since work stopped for the winter season. The construction of the rapidways, which began in October 2009, is expected to be completed by November 2010, bringing commuters one step closer to quicker and more convenient public transportation.

Metrolinx proposes new funding schedule

Metrolinx today presented a new funding schedule to their Board of Directors for The Regional Municipality of York vivaNext projects originally funded in April 2009.

Under the proposed new schedule, York Region will receive $790 million from Metrolinx for projects to be constructed over the next five years, and $965 million for projects to be constructed between 2016 and 2020.

Viva Rapid Transit Construction Underway

Construction is underway on 37 kilometres of dedicated bus lanes in York Region that will provide faster, more reliable service to commuters.
It is estimated that 11,000 jobs will be created with the construction of this $1.4-billion York Viva Rapidway, funded by the province.
