Removal of medians begins

What type of work is being done?

Raised medians in the centre of the roadway will be removed along Highway 7, between Bayview Avenue and Highway 404, starting next week and into May. Once removed, the area will be paved over.

Why is it being done?

  • To accommodate the widening of Highway 7 for the vivaNext rapidways
  • So traffic lanes can be shifted and construction can begin

What does the work entail?

Raised centre medians will be removed one block at a time and paved over to level the roadway

What impact will there be?

  • Moderate delays due to merging traffic
  • There will be one lane closed for both eastbound and westbound motorists during off-peak hours
  • The short-term lane closures will last from 3 to 5 days per block

Will the construction affect existing bus routes?

Normal transit service will continue along Highway 7

How will the work zone be separated from traffic?

  • There will be construction and road signs to indicate the work area
  • Watch for barricades and equipment located at the centre median

Highway 7 East \ Markham and Richmond Hill

Where east meets west.

Markham and Richmond Hill are becoming key destinations within York Region. The Highway 7 East rapidways that travel through both of these municipalities will connect to the Richmond Hill Centre, a new mixed-use urban centre featuring businesses, homes, shops, restaurants, a 10-acre park, a theatre – and you. This is where the planned Yonge North Subway extension will begin (or end). Pick your ride – any ride. From Richmond Hill Centre you’ll find connections to viva, GO, YRT and TTC.

Work started in the Highway 7 right-of-way in April 2011. The first stretch of Viva rapid transit service launched in August 2013 in the centre median, or rapidway, along Highway 7 from Bayview Avenue to Highway 404. In August 2014, the second stretch opened from Highway 404 to South Town Centre Boulevard, and the last piece to Warden Avenue will open by the end of 2014. Future plans to build east to Reesor Road are dependent on additional funding commitments.
