Pre-construction work continues on Highway 7

In addition to hydro pole relocation along Highway 7, additional archaeological investigations are being conducted to meet the requirements of the Highway 7 Corridor (Yonge to Warden) Environmental Assessment

Where exactly is this going on?

Archaeological investigations will take place in the boulevard adjacent to the westbound curb lane west of Woodbine Avenue at Brown’s Corners United Church.

When will the archaeological investigations start?

Work will commence the week of January 31, 2011.

How long will the assessments take?

Weather is a factor in how quickly the assessments can be done, but we’re estimating about two weeks.

What does the work entail?

Archaeological crews will dig 40cm down in the boulevard area, remove soil by hand and/or machinery and sift soil for artifacts. A ground thaw heater is used to soften the earth and remove moisture which allows for a cleaner excavation.

What impact will there be?

There will be temporary lane closures from Monday to Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., in the westbound curb lane of Highway 7, just west of Woodbine Avenue. Access to Brown’s Corners United Church and adjacent properties will be maintained.

Highway 7 East \ Markham and Richmond Hill

Where east meets west.

Markham and Richmond Hill are becoming key destinations within York Region. The Highway 7 East rapidways that travel through both of these municipalities will connect to the Richmond Hill Centre, a new mixed-use urban centre featuring businesses, homes, shops, restaurants, a 10-acre park, a theatre – and you. This is where the planned Yonge North Subway extension will begin (or end). Pick your ride – any ride. From Richmond Hill Centre you’ll find connections to viva, GO, YRT and TTC.

Work started in the Highway 7 right-of-way in April 2011. The first stretch of Viva rapid transit service launched in August 2013 in the centre median, or rapidway, along Highway 7 from Bayview Avenue to Highway 404. In August 2014, the second stretch opened from Highway 404 to South Town Centre Boulevard, and the last piece to Warden Avenue will open by the end of 2014. Future plans to build east to Reesor Road are dependent on additional funding commitments.
