Night time construction

What type of work is being done?

  • We are installing a new watermain in Richmond Hill as well as new sewers along Highway 7 East. The area of impact for this work is between Saddlecreek Drive and Highway 404. This work will start Sunday, June 26 from 7:00pm to 6:00am, and will take approximately two weeks to complete.

What does the work entail?

  • We will need to dig a trench
  • New pipes will be installed, and the trench will be filled
  • The existing road will be restored

What impact will there be?

  • There will be continuous noise from the sound of our equipment (backhoes and excavators) and beeping from trucks reversing.
  • Three eastbound lanes will be closed along Highway 7 on some nights during the weeks of Sunday, June 26 and Sunday, July 3. The intersections will remain open
  • The westbound lanes will be used for both east and westbound traffic with police officers on site to manage traffic flow
  • There will be occasional lane closures on Commerce Valley Drive West and Commerce Valley Drive East south of Highway 7, starting the week of Sunday, June 26. The intersections will remain open
  • Work will be completed as quickly as possible to minimize any inconvenience

What any bus stops be affected?

  • The boarding areas for Viva stops on the south side at West Beaver Creek, Saddlecreek, Leslie, East Beaver Creek and Valleymede will be temporarily relocated from the hours of 9:00pm to 6:00am for one night:
    • West Beaver Creek
    • East Beaver Creek
    • Saddlecreek (YRT stop)
    • Valleymede
    • Leslie

Please watch for signs to temporary stop locations. We will advise when exact dates become available.

What are we doing to assist riders?

  • The fare equipment, street furniture, and access to the sidewalk will remain open to passengers
  • An accessible boarding area will be maintained
  • There will be stanchions and signage to identify temporary bus stops
  • Staff will be onsite to direct riders
  • Wayfinding signage will be provided for riders

Thank you for your patience during this time. This construction is important to your neighbourhood.

Please Note: As with all construction projects, work may need to be rescheduled due to weather. We’ll provide advance notice whenever possible.

Highway 7 East \ Markham and Richmond Hill

Where east meets west.

Markham and Richmond Hill are becoming key destinations within York Region. The Highway 7 East rapidways that travel through both of these municipalities will connect to the Richmond Hill Centre, a new mixed-use urban centre featuring businesses, homes, shops, restaurants, a 10-acre park, a theatre – and you. This is where the planned Yonge North Subway extension will begin (or end). Pick your ride – any ride. From Richmond Hill Centre you’ll find connections to viva, GO, YRT and TTC.

Work started in the Highway 7 right-of-way in April 2011. The first stretch of Viva rapid transit service launched in August 2013 in the centre median, or rapidway, along Highway 7 from Bayview Avenue to Highway 404. In August 2014, the second stretch opened from Highway 404 to South Town Centre Boulevard, and the last piece to Warden Avenue will open by the end of 2014. Future plans to build east to Reesor Road are dependent on additional funding commitments.
