Environmental Assessments
Two to three years.
That's how long the environmental assessment process for transit projects used to take to complete.
Then, in 2008, the Ontario government introduced a new six-month Transit Project Assessment Process to help "get transit projects up and running as quickly as possible and people onto public transit sooner...improving air quality and reducing commuting times." VivaNext's Yonge subway extension was the first transit project eligible for this new six-month process.
Although the environmental assessment process for transit projects has been streamlined, it is still a highly comprehensive one and all potential impacts of transit projects such as vivaNext are thoroughly considered.
