Breaking ground for rapidways

Metrolinx is committed to working with York Region to break ground on the rapidways this year. “Progress is going very well indeed,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Robert Prichard at the July public board meeting.

The Yonge subway is Canada’s first subway line. When it officially opened on March 30, 1954, it extended from Union Station to Eglinton Station. Over 600 guests were invited to ride on its inaugural run, which departed Eglinton Station at 11:56 a.m. and arrived at Union Station precisely fourteen minutes later at 12:10 p.m..

A recent survey jointly conducted by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the City of Toronto and the Regions of York, Durham, and Peel found that average speeds on highways and roadways in and around the GTA, especially along Highway 7, are decreasing due to traffic congestion and that the average vehicular trip now takes 11% to 21% longer than the exact same trip in 2002.
