Davis Drive: getting ready for construction

Starting March 14, crews will begin removing trees along Davis Drive in preparation for road widening construction as well as moving utilities farther back from the roadway. Once the construction is complete, Davis Drive will include attractive landscaping with nearly 27% more trees than originally removed to build the rapidways.

Why are trees being removed along Davis Drive?

Davis Drive is being widened for rapidways – dedicated lanes in the centre of the road for rapid transit. Trees near the roadway need to be removed to allow for building retaining walls, relocating utilities and widening the road.

How many trees are being removed vs. preserved?

In preparation for spring construction, 95 trees are being preserved and 223 trees of varying health and sizes will be removed. Once the rapidway project is complete, landscaping will include approximately 350 new trees

When are the trees being removed?

  • Dates: March 14 – 30
  • Hours of work: 7am to 7pm .

Where are trees being removed from?

Trees will be removed along the south side of Davis Drive first from Yonge Street to Huron Heights and then on the north side from Huron Heights back to Yonge Street.

Being mindful of the community, crews will remove trees in sections and chip the wood off site. All areas will be cleaned up before moving on to the next location

What are the trees being replaced with?

Once the rapidway is built, Davis Drive will have attractive, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and extensive landscaping with many types of trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennial flowers.

What impacts will there be during this work?

  • Temporary lane closures: as required, 9:30am to 3:30pm in the eastbound and westbound curb lanes as crews move along the corridor.
  • Sidewalks will remain open and a flag person will be on site to direct pedestrians.
