Talk about a great start!
Since Viva's launch in September 2005, overall transit boardings have increased by approximately 15.7% in York Region. Viva has also helped to jump-start millions of square feet of mixed-use, transit-oriented development.
Viva's first phase was implemented through a public-private partnership formed between The Regional Municipality of York and York Consortium 2002 on June 27, 2002, following a competitive bidding process.
Now York Region's three-phase commitment to a rapid transit solution is about to shift into second gear with vivaNext, the next phase in the development and expansion of the Viva network. Metrolinx identified the vivaNext plan as a key piece of The Big Move, its transportation plan to reduce traffic congestion across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. On April 1, 2009, the Province of Ontario committed $1.4 billion towards the vivaNext rapidways.
Working in partnership with Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario, York Consortium 2002 and others, the funded rapidways will be designed and built to serve the public for generations to come. Under governance frameworks established with Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario, York Region Rapid Transit Corporation will implement the rapidway portion of its vivaNext plan.
Our Board of Directors, appointed by Regional Council, remain focused on the vivaNext plan and our mission to deliver a renowned rapid transit network that moves people reliably, connects urban centres and shapes development of our living environment. In doing so, Viva will continue to help sustain economic growth, contribute to the health of our environment and improve the quality of life for future generations.
