Talk about a great start!
Since Viva's launch in September 2005, overall transit boardings have increased by approximately 57% in York Region. Viva has also helped to jump-start millions of square feet of mixed-use, transit-oriented development.
Now York Region's three-phase commitment to a rapid transit solution is about to shift into second gear with vivaNext, the next phase in the development and expansion of the Viva network.
With vivaNext, our mission is to deliver world-class rapid transit that moves people quickly, connects communities and shapes our living environment. In doing so, Viva will continue to help sustain economic growth, contribute to the health of our environment and improve the quality of life for future generations.
Like Viva's first phase, vivaNext will be implemented by the public-private partnership formed between The Regional Municipality of York and York Consortium 2002 on June 27, 2002, following a competitive bidding process.
Metrolinx has identified the vivaNext plan as a key piece of The Big Move, its transportation plan to reduce gridlock across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Capital funding for vivaNext projects is anticipated from all levels of government.
