1. How long have you owned Sports Performance Centres, and how did you start out?
Andreo and I are business partners, and both of us are practicing Chiropractic Sports Specialists in addition to being directors here at SPC. The business started 13 years ago back in our first location over at Centre and Dufferin. As sports and rehab specialists, we wanted to help people get to where they want to be in their physical activities, and athletically in their sports. We work with a variety of active  people in team and individual sports, from professionals to weekend warriors.

2. What do you like most about being a business owner?
It gives us the opportunity to lead a team of health care professionals and take responsibility for ensuring our collective success.

3. What is your favourite, most satisfying thing about your particular type of business?
The best thing about being a sports doctor is that we genuinely like helping people move better – and it’s incredibly satisfying helping people achieve their athletic goals.

4. What’s the best thing about your clients?
The best thing about our clients and patients is how appreciative they are; the heartfelt thanks you get is inspiring, and once they experience better movement, less pain, or start to achieve what they’re aiming for, they also start sending in friends and family.

5. How has your business changed over time?
We started out more with clients with acute injuries. Now we’re working more and more on performance care at different points in their athletic development and journey. That being said, we are not limited to any particular sport and look at all patients from the perspective of what physical activities they want to perform better.

6. What’s your best piece of advice you have for your clients?
Don’t stop moving! Keeping up a variety of movement, and not getting stuck in any one position for too long is crucial to living long and more importantly living well!

7. Why did you choose to locate here in Vaughan – and what do you like most about it?
We wanted more space, and the thing we like about being here is how central is it and how easy it is for our clients and patients to get here. Of course, the 407 access really makes it possible. We have clients from Burlington, Barrie, Ajax, Toronto, Vaughan – it’s helpful that it’s close and central.

1. How long have you owned Sinfully Delicious, and how did you start out?

Cindy and I had been talking about starting a catering business for years, and then at 3am one night, Cindy sent me a text saying, “it’s time!” We opened our catering business up in King City two years ago. Then, we decided to open a storefront restaurant last August, and that’s when we opened here on Highway 7.

2. What is your favourite, most satisfying thing about your particular type of business?

Our favourite thing about creating homemade Italian food is pleasing people’s bellies! We can try different recipes, and we also use some of our grandmothers’ traditional recipes.

3. What do you like most about being business owners?

We have the freedom to try different things whenever we feel the time is right. One day, we feel like creating something new, we do it! Plus, we can contribute to the community! We prepare delicious, nutritious food for hot lunch programs in five York Region schools.

4. What’s the best thing about your customers?

The best thing about our customers is that they’re friendly and they’re loyal. They’re like family to us because we’re cooking for them in our own kitchen. We’re like their mothers or their wives – we tell them to finish everything on their plates!

5. What’s your best piece of advice you have for your customers?

We have four best pieces of advice. #1. Bring your appetite. #2. Don’t worry about being on a diet. #3. Finish everything on your plate. #4. And, enjoy!

6. What is your most Sinfully Delicious dish?

We’re going to give you three. All three are the most Sinfully Delicious! #1. Lasagna - just like our moms make. #2. Veal - extra delicious. #3. Pizza - you’ll absolutely love it.

7. Why did you choose to locate here in Vaughan – and what do you like about it?

We wanted the extra exposure you gain with a storefront shop, and we wanted to be able to offer eat-in and not just catering. We like being here in Vaughan because it’s such a central location. It’s in the city, but not! We really like that there are lots of different people coming through.

A true “gem” of a destination, MCD Jewellery on Highway 7 at Keele, has been in business for over 31 years. We spoke to the proprietor, Mr. Mark Covant, and asked him 7 Questions.

1.      How long have you owned MCD Jewellery, and how did you start out?

I’ve been in business now for 31 years plus, and before that, I worked in the family jewellery business at Bloor and Bathurst in Toronto. I started out at Keele & Langstaff, in an industrial area. Our pricing is in the discount/wholesale range – we keep expenses and overhead low, so our prices can stay low. It works for us! Then we moved down here to Highway 7. I believe we were the first jeweller in Concord.

2. What is your favourite, most satisfying thing about your particular type of business?

The reason we got into jewellery buying and selling is that I’m a true treasure hunter – it’s thrilling! And the reason I got into designing jewellery is because it allows me to be creative.

3. What do you like most about being a business owner?

I love buying and selling deals! And being a business owner allows me to make my own decisions about the business.

4. What’s the best thing about your customers?

The best thing about my customers is that they are also treasure hunters. They’re not looking for the same thing as everyone else. They’re looking for a one-of-a-kind piece, whether it’s new or estate. And we have the latest pieces for them, at a range of prices. We like to say, from $100 to $100,000.

5. How has your business changed over time?

I started out treasure hunting and went into wholesale. Now we bring in the most up-to-date, on-trend, pieces. If a trend is happening in Europe, we have it here before anybody else. But I’m still a treasure hunter!

6. What’s your best piece of advice you have for your customers?

Deal with us! We have it all. We are a destination, not an impulse shop. We’re very customer-service oriented and knowledgeable about the jewellery business.

7. Why did you choose to locate here in Vaughan – and what do you like about it?

We’ve been 30 years in this location. Coming to Highway 7 gave us the opportunity to own the location and not have to lease. Since we do wholesale and retail, this is our retail division. Everyone comes along Highway 7 – it’s a major route and a central location.

1.      How long have you owned Chattels, and how did you start out?

I had worked in the home décor industry for many years for different companies. At a certain point, my mother Soula backed me up and inspired me to open Chattels. This was five years ago, and we couldn’t be happier with our decision to be working together.

2.      What do you like most about being a business owner?

Being a small business owner, we face professional challenges – yet our job represents our passion and that seems to make the sacrifices well worth it!

3.      What is your favourite, most satisfying thing about your particular type of business?

In addition to selling furnishings, as an interior decorator it’s so rewarding to be told that I have affected their lives by creating an environment they love coming home to.

4.      What’s the best thing about your customers?

Their loyalty and appreciation. When they are content with the work I have provided, and invite me to they return to finish other areas in their home, or when they think of us when telling a family member or friend, it’s incredibly rewarding. 5.      How has your business changed over time?

People have increasingly shown more interest in their homes and are looking for different ways to furnish their space. I have to be more creative and inspiring. It’s about creating convenience, comfort and beauty for the customer, and listening to their needs. It’s more than just selling furniture – it’s more about fostering a lifestyle.

As for trends, the biggest change that we have noticed is a shift toward Canadian-made and designed furnishings. We increasingly sell a lot of custom Canadian furniture. People are preferring to spend a little more to get a better product.

6.      What’s your best piece of advice you have for your customers?

1.   How long have you owned Lighting Palace, and how did you start out?
It’s coming up to 10 years – 10 years in November – since I bought the business, taking it over in its infancy. Why was I interested in that business? I’d been working in the lighting business for about 15 years beforehand.

2.   What do you like most about being a business owner?
The thing I enjoy most is researching new products, and then being able to help my customers by giving them the best information for them to choose lighting for their homes.

3.   What is your favourite thing about the lighting business?
Helping people beautify their homes!

4.   What’s the best thing about your customers?
I get to meet people from all walks of life, from every background and ethnicity. Our clientele is like a microcosm of the entire region.

5.   How has your business changed over time?
Our customer base has grown and expanded.

6.   What’s your best piece of lighting advice you have for your customers?
Don’t settle for second best! Look around, visualize, then go home and sleep on it. There’s no rush. I want them to make sure they get the one they really love.

7.   Why did you choose to locate here in Vaughan – and what do you like about it?
Highway 7 is the main thoroughfare for the entire region. Everyone comes through here, so it’s turned out to be a convenient location for our clientèle.
