planter box, streetlight and retaining wall installations on Yonge in Newmarket

March 01, 2018

Although it may look like construction slowed down this winter, crews have been busy transforming boulevard streetscape on the west side of Yonge Street between Sawmill Valley Drive/Savage Road and Davis Drive.

Over the winter, crews installed 24 planter boxes and 20 permanent street lights, and will continue with installations north towards Davis. Crews have also started to install a third retaining wall at Yonge and Millard Avenue West. Please see below for more details.

Map of construction work areas

preparing for greenery on Yonge

  • Crews will continue installing the remaining 105 concrete planter boxes on the west side of Yonge between Sawmill Valley/Savage and Davis for the next several months.
  • These planter boxes will be for future trees, shrubs and plants.
  • Crews will be digging and building foundations for the planters, then forming and pouring the concrete planter walls.
  • Most work will take place on the boulevard and in the existing construction areas; however some curb lane closures may be required periodically, to allow access for trucks and equipment.

installing permanent streetlights

  • Crews will continue installing the remaining 45 permanent streetlights on the west side of Yonge between Sawmill Valley/Savage and Davis over the next few months.
  • Once the permanent streetlights have been installed to Davis, crews will activate the new lights and remove the temporary streetlights from the hydro poles.
  • Most work will take place in the existing construction areas; however some curb lane closures may be required periodically, to allow access for trucks and equipment.

third retaining wall installation

  • Crews will continue installing a large retaining wall at the Yonge and Millard intersection, which will take approximately two weeks.
  • Retaining walls are built to provide stability between two areas of land at different heights, with the wall supporting the higher level of ground.
  • Most work will take place in the existing construction areas; however some curb lane closures may be required periodically, to allow access for trucks and equipment.
  • Temporary sidewalk closures around the work zone may be required. Please follow signs to help guide you to your destination.
  • If required, traffic control personnel will be on site to guide pedestrians around the work zone.
  • There will be noise, dust, and intermittent vibrations associated with this work.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be re-scheduled due to weather. We’ll provide advanced notice when possible. Watch twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
