November 21, 2017

The transformation is unfolding on Yonge Street in Newmarket, with crews having made a lot of progress both above and below ground this year. As the year comes to an end, it’s now time to reflect on our accomplishments and get a sneak peek into what’s scheduled to unfold in 2018.

2017 milestones

  • More than 100 new hydro poles were installed and connected earlier this year, allowing for road widening works to start.
  • Storm sewers were installed along the length of the construction project on the west side of Yonge.
  • A number of Cupolex® were installed on the west side of Yonge between Mulock Drive and Eagle Street West, and the first set of planter boxes were installed between Mulock and Clearmeadow Boulevard.
  • New curbs were poured on the west side of Yonge within the construction limit.
  • Crews removed existing sidewalks between Mulock and Davis Drive. New sidewalks were then poured between Mulock and Clearmeadow, with crews scheduled to continue with sidewalk installation in the spring.

what’s ahead for 2018

  • Crews will complete boulevard work [including pouring concrete and installing paver stones], and streetscapes [trees and other greenery], on the west side of Yonge.
  • Crews will then move to the east side of Yonge, where they will repeat road widening works that were performed on the west side. This includes:
    • Traffic lanes being shifted, reduced and narrowed at times.
    • During peak hours you can expect to see two open lanes in each direction.
    • Removing existing pavement, curbs and sidewalks.
    • Installing storm sewer, pipes, new curbs, boulevards and planter boxes.
    • Backfilling and paving the widened area of the roadway.
