June 05, 2017

This week, crews will reach an important milestone by installing the final six hydro poles, removing old poles and stringing cables on the west side of Yonge Street, just north of Millard Avenue in Newmarket. Since August, crews have been busy installing more than 100 new hydro poles, each of them weighing approximately 9071 kilograms [20,000 pounds], and measuring approximately 30 metres [100 feet] tall.

work dates*: Wednesday, June 7 to Friday, June 23

what you need to know:

  • On Wednesday, June 7 and Thursday, June 8, crews will install the final six hydro poles.
    • For each pole installation, traffic will be reduced to one lane around the work area to set up the crane and deliver the poles.
    • For everyone’s safety, as each pole is hoisted high in the air and placed on its foundation, Yonge will be closed in both directions for up to 15 minutes.
  • Traffic control staff or paid duty police officers will be on site to direct traffic.
  • After the poles are installed, crews will remove old poles, string cables, remove remaining equipment and clean-up their work area.
    • During this work, traffic will be periodically reduced to one southbound lane around the work area, as required.
  • Where sidewalks and bus stops are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk and bus stop.
  • For your own safety, please follow detour signs and cross at signalized intersections.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

*Please Note: As with all construction projects, some work may be re-scheduled due to weather. We’ll provide advanced notice when possible.

We thank you for your patience while crews work quickly to complete this work. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
