hydro pole installation continues on Yonge in Newmarket

August 5, 2016

Hydro crews are making good progress with the installation of new concrete poles on Yonge Street from Sawmill Valley Drive/Savage Road to Davis Drive. They are working hard to try and have 50 poles in place by the end of the year and in its final state, there will be over 100 new poles installed on the corridor.

Please read on for more information about the traffic impacts during pole installation.

poles

work dates*: Monday, August 8 to Friday, December 23
work hours*: 7am–7pm

what you need to know:

  • For each pole installation, traffic will be reduced to one lane around the work area to set up the crane and deliver the poles.
  • For everyone’s safety, as each pole is hoisted high in the air and placed on its foundation, Yonge will be closed in both directions for up to 15 minutes.
  • Traffic control staff or paid duty police officers will be on site to direct traffic.
  • Sidewalks will be closed around the work areas. Directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
  • There will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks. At times, generators will be used to maintain power as crews transfer wires to the new poles. These generators will be in operation 24 hours a day while the wire transfer takes place.

the hydro relocation process:

  • Excavate pits and install concrete foundations to support the new poles.
  • Deliver and install poles.
  • Transfer service from old poles to new poles.
  • Remove old poles.

* Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We’ll provide advance notice whenever possible.

We understand that construction can be disruptive and we thank you in advance for your patience during this time.
