the next stage of median work begins on Yonge Street

July 6, 2016

To prepare for the installation of the new water main on Yonge Street from Garden Avenue to Major Mackenzie Drive, a number of tasks will need to be completed ahead of time. Starting tomorrow, crews will remove median strips [the areas that separate opposing lanes of traffic] from Baif Boulevard to just north of Major Mackenzie Drive. Please see below for details:

Map of construction work areas

work dates*: Thursday, July 7 to Friday, July 29
work hours: 7:00am–7:00pm

what you need to know

  • Crews will start at Baif working their way north to Major Mackenzie, however, at times they will be required to move back and forth throughout the work area to complete the work.
  • This work will require one northbound and one southbound lane closure closest to the median strip, as crews complete this task in three steps:
    • Medians will be removed, one at a time, moving from south to north.
    • Next, crews will pave each area where median strips were removed.
    • Finally, crews will paint traffic lines.
  • Lane closures will take place during off peak hours.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be on site as required.
  • There will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
  • Some weekend or night time work may be required.

next steps

Once median strip removals are complete from Baif to Major Mackenzie, temporary traffic signals will be installed and road widening will be done in select areas to make room for a shift in traffic lanes through the area.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We’ll provide advance notice whenever possible.

We understand that construction can be disruptive and we thank you for your patience. If you have questions about the Yonge Street rapidway project please contact:
