gas main installation continues on Yonge Street

May 25, 2016

The transformation of Yonge Street in Richmond Hill includes many components — some that you will see [i.e. road widening and attractive streetscapes] and some that you won’t see [i.e. underground infrastructure improvements, utilities and culverts]. Over the last few months, new gas mains have been installed along Yonge. Starting tomorrow, the next segment will begin on the west side of Yonge from just south of Edgar Avenue to just north of Carrville Road / 16th Avenue. Please see below for details.

Map of construction work areas

work dates*: Thursday, May 26 for about three months
work hours: 7am–7pm

  • The gas main will be installed using directional drilling, a tunneling technique that minimizes disruption and excavation. Trenches will also be used in select areas.
  • Crews will then connect gas services to the new gas main, filling trenches and restoring the road and boulevard.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks will remain open. If a sidewalk is closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Bus stops around the intersection of Yonge and Carrville / 16th will be temporarily relocated as work progresses. Please look for signs and follow directions.
  • Temporary curb lane closures will be required in work areas during off-peak hours [9:30am–3:30pm].
  • There will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
  • Some weekend work may be required.

* Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We’ll provide advance notice whenever possible.
