utility installation on Baif/Observatory at Yonge

Starting Monday, crews will be installing utilities across Baif Boulevard and Observatory Lane, at Yonge Street. Crews will start north of the intersection, and work south. Please see below for more information.

work dates*: Monday, March 12 – Friday, March 23
work hours*: 7am-7pm

what you need to know:

stage 1:

  • Crews will start utility installation on the north side of Baif and north side of Observatory, and work south.
  • To accommodate this work, Observatory will be reduced to a single shared lane for eastbound and westbound traffic within the work zone during work hours. Traffic control personnel will be onsite.
  • Baif will also be reduced to one eastbound and one westbound lane within the work zone.
  • The sidewalk on the northeast corner of the intersection will be closed for the duration of this work. Directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Crews will backfill and steel plate the work areas and all lanes will be re-opened at the end of each day.
  • After this stage of work has been completed, crews will backfill and pave the work areas.

stage 2:

  • Crews will progress south across Baif and Observatory.
  • To accommodate this work, Observatory will be reduced to one eastbound and one westbound lane within the work zone.
  • Baif will be reduced to a single shared lane for eastbound and westbound traffic within the work zone during work hours. Traffic control personnel will be onsite.
  • The sidewalk on the southeast corner of the intersection will be closed for the duration of this work. Directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Crews will backfill and steel plate the work areas and all lanes will be re-opened at the end of each day.
  • After this stage of work has been completed, crews will backfill and pave the work areas.

Other details:

  • Access to businesses and properties near the work area will be maintained.
  • Paid duty police officers will be onsite during work hours for the duration of work.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks and bus stops will remain open. If a sidewalk or bus stop is closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk or bus stop.
  • Some weekend work may be required.
  • Due to the nature of this work, at times, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
  • Please expect delays, give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
