next week: overnight work scheduled in Richmond Hill

Starting Monday, August 14, crews will be performing a couple of overnight work activities in Richmond Hill. Please see below for more details.

overnight water main installation on Yonge from Harding to Major Mackenzie

The next segment of water main installation on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill will start on Monday, August 14 as crews will be staging the east side of Yonge from Harding Boulevard East to Elmwood Avenue, and the west side of Yonge from Hopkins Street to Major Mackenzie Drive West.

work dates*: Monday, August 14, for approximately 11 weeks
work hours: 7pm-7am, mostly overnight

description of the work:

  • For approximately 11 weeks, crews will be trenching along Yonge from Harding to Major Mackenzie.
  • The new water main will be installed using the trenching process, then backfilling as they go.
  • Crews will be required at times to move back and forth through the work zone to complete different tasks associated with the overall work.
  • Once trenching and installations are complete, crews will connect water services to the new water main.

Stage 1:

  • Starting Monday, August 14, crews will be preparing for the work by staging the east side of Yonge from Harding to Elmwood, and the west side of Yonge from Hopkins to Major Mackenzie.
  • Crews will be shifting traffic on Yonge to the west while performing work on the east side, and shifting traffic to the east while working on the west side of Yonge.
  • Crews will also be placing jersey barriers [concrete dividers] within the work zone.
  • On Monday, August 14, crews will line paint between Harding and Major Mackenzie.

Stage 2:

  • Starting Monday, August 21, crews will trench along the east side of Yonge between Harding and Elmwood. Crews will then trench west across Yonge, just north of Hopkins, and head north from Hopkins to Major Mackenzie West.
  • Crews will then trench across Major Mackenzie West, and head east across Yonge.
  • Traffic on Yonge will be reduced overnight to one lane in each direction from Harding to Major Mackenzie.
  • During the day, temporary northbound or southbound lane closures on Yonge will be required through the work area.
  • Most of the water main installation will take place overnight [7pm-7am], however some work will be scheduled during the day.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be onsite as required.
  • Sidewalks will be closed through the work area. Signage will be onsite to guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated as work progresses. Where bus stops are affected, directional signage will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop.
  • Access to businesses and properties near work areas will be maintained; however, driveways may be reduced or temporarily disrupted. Advance notice will be provided wherever possible.

crews dedicated to minimize disruption where possible:

  • Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper
  • Aim headlights away from buildings and homes
  • Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates
  • Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings
  • Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we perform this complex work deep below the roadway as quickly as possible. We understand it is very disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible.

While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable. Read more about how we balance the needs of the corridor in our recent blog working day and night.
