work continues on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill

In order to prepare for road widening work, residents can expect to see a number of construction activities underway along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, including utility installation and temporary traffic signal installation.

utility installation on Yonge from Elgin Mills to Bernard

Starting Tuesday, crews will be installing a duct bank [a structure which gathers together and encases telecommunications and hydro cables] on the east side of Yonge Street from Elgin Mills Road to Bernard Avenue.

work dates*: Tuesday, July 4, for approximately 6 months
work hours: 7am-7pm

  • Crews will start at Bernard and work south.
  • There will be temporary northbound curb lane closures. More information about these lane closures will be provided once the details are confirmed.
  • Access will be maintained to properties in work areas; however driveways may be reduced or temporarily disrupted. Advance notice will be provided wherever possible.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks will remain open. If a sidewalk is closed, directional signage will be onsite to guide pedestrians.
  • Some bus stop relocations may be required for this work. Where bus stops are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop.
  • Some weekend and overnight work may be required.
  • The large equipment used for these operations will be stored along the boulevards for the duration of this work.


temporary traffic signal installation at Oak/Northern Heights

Starting Tuesday, crews will be installing temporary traffic signals at the intersection of Yonge Street and Oak Avenue/Northern Heights Drive. After the temporary poles and signals have been installed, traffic signals will be activated. Details and dates will be provided at a later time.

work dates*: Tuesday, July 4, for approximately 4 weeks
work hours: 7am-7pm

  • There will be temporary curb lane closures around the work areas as crews install the temporary traffic poles and signals.
  • During stage 1, there will be temporary curb lane closures around the work areas as crews install the temporary traffic poles and signals.
  • During stage 2, there will be short duration left-turn lane closures while crews suspend and secure the temporary traffic signals.
  • Traffic control personnel and paid duty police officers will be on site as required.
  • Bus stops and sidewalks will remain open. If a bus stop or sidewalk is closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • There will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
