overnight work >> road widening begins with a traffic shift on Highway 7 West plus CN Bridge expansion joint repairs

September 8, 2017

The vivaNext rapidway project on Highway 7 West is making excellent progress! Starting Sunday night, to accommodate the start of road widening and storm sewer work, there will be a traffic shift on Hwy 7 West from Weston Road to Pine Valley Drive. In addition, starting Monday night , there will be lane closures on the CN Bridge on Hwy 7 for work on expansion joints. Please see below for further details.

Map: Highway 7 West work area

traffic shift:

work dates*: Sunday, Sept. 10 to Friday, Sept. 15 [night work]
work hours*: 8pm–6am
  • In preparation for future road widening and storm sewer installations, crews will be shifting traffic on Highway 7 West slightly toward the south side of the street, from just west of Weston to just east of Pine Valley.
  • This lane shift will be in place for several months.
  • To accommodate this work, at 8pm Sunday night, Highway 7 West will be reduced to one lane in each direction both eastbound and westbound in order for crews to remove old traffic lines and paint new ones.
  • Next, the newly painted lanes will reopen and the remaining lanes will then be closed to remove old painted lines and paint new ones.
  • Finally, lanes will reopen again with three lanes eastbound and three lanes westbound.

CN Bridge expansion joints:

work dates*: Monday, Sept. 11 to Friday, Sept. 15 [night work]
work hours*: 7pm–6am
  • To complete the expansion joint deficiency work on the CN Bridge, there will be lane closures and a traffic shift, both east and west of the bridge.
  • The first stage will have eastbound and westbound traffic shifted into the curb lanes.
  • The second stage of the work will shift both directions of traffic into the median lanes [beside the rapidway].
  • Lanes will fully reopen each morning by 6am.
general impacts:
  • Sidewalks and bus stops will remain open wherever possible. If a sidewalk or bus stop is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk or bus stop.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

We understand that overnight work is disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible. While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable. Read more about how we balance the needs of the corridor in working day and night.

crews dedicated to minimize disruption where possible:

  • Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper.
  • Aim headlights away from buildings and homes.
  • Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates.
  • Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings.
  • Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible. Check twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
