road widening begins along highway 7 west

July 19, 2014

The transformation is underway along Highway 7 West. Crews have been busy relocating underground infrastructure, including sewer, hydro and telecommunications, and starting next week road widening will begin from Jane Street to the CN Bridge. In order to accommodate multiple work activities related to this construction, traffic lanes will be shifted, reduced and narrowed. Please see below for further details.

Work dates*: Starting the week of July 21, for approximately 3 months*

Work hours: Monday – Friday from 7am-7pm

Note: some overnight and weekend work may be required

general description of the road widening process:

  • line paint the road and shift traffic to the north
  • remove existing pavement, curbs and sidewalks on the south side [where required]
  • install new curbs, gutters and toe walls [where required]
  • backfill and pave the area

what impacts will there be?

  • To prepare for the lane shift, from July 21-22*, crews will be working from 7pm-7am to line paint the road from Jane to the CN Bridge. During the line painting work, east and westbound traffic lanes will be intermittently closed overnight. Due to the nature of this work there will be noise and vibration around work areas
  • Once line painting is complete, traffic lanes will be shifted north and narrowed. East and westbound traffic will be reduced to two lanes between Jane Street and the CN Bridge.

  • Dedicated left-turn lanes at signalized intersections and a centre emergency services/shared left-turn lane will remain, where possible.
  • Where bus stops and sidewalks are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.

  • Businesses are open during construction and access to driveways will be maintained.

  • Please note that this traffic shift will remain in place until spring 2015 as road widening work continues. Additional notices and updates regarding major impacts and closures associated with road widening activities will be issued as details are confirmed.

Please remember to reduce your speed through construction zones and be mindful of traffic shifts and signs that will help guide you along your way. Always drive with care and give yourself extra time to get to your destination safely.
