underground hydro relocation work on highway 7 west

December 20, 2013

In addition to relocating hydro poles to accommodate the road widening on Highway 7 West, hydro crews will soon begin to install underground hydro lines from Edgeley Boulevard to east of Jane Street. This work will be completed in segments over several months. Please see details below about the first segment:

dates: The first segment will begin on Monday, January 6, 2014, for approximately six weeks
hours of work: 7am-7pm

work locations

  • Crews will install underground hydro lines along the boulevards on both the north and south sides of Highway 7 West between Millway Avenue to east of Jane Street, and the along the northeast side of Jane Street. They will also be excavating and working within the intersection.
  • Construction activities will move back and forth throughout these work areas.

general description of hydro relocation process

  • Pits will be excavated and new hydro cables will be installed underground.
  • Hydro service will be transferred from old poles to new underground cables.
  • Crews will then remove old wooden poles, backfill and restore the work areas.

what impact will there be?

  • Jane Street may be reduced to one lane in each direction at Highway 7 for the duration of this segment of work. All north and southbound traffic will be shifted to the west side of the intersection. Highway 7 will be reduced to two westbound through lanes.
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, with dedicated left-turn lanes. Dedicated right-turn lanes will be reduced. Expect traffic delays due to lane restrictions.
  • Sidewalks may be impacted by this work. If a sidewalk is closed, directional signs will be onsite to guide pedestrians.
  • Access will be maintained to driveways in work areas.
  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated as the hydro work moves down the corridor. Where bus stops are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty officers will be on site as required.
  • There will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
  • Some weekend work may be required.
