retaining wall construction begins on Highway 7 West

November 21, 2013

As part of rapidway construction, we will be building several retaining walls along Highway 7 West. Retaining walls are built to provide stability between two areas of land that sit at different heights. The retaining wall is used to hold the slope in place and support the higher level of ground.

The first wall will be built at the southeast corner of Jane Street and Highway 7 to preserve the existing Black Creek Culvert [a tunnel or pipe used to allow water to move easily from one side of an obstruction to the other]. As part of this work, crews will also be installing the first oil grit separator [structures that remove sediment, screen debris, and separate oil from the storm sewer system] in the same work area.

work dates: Starting the week of November 25 until mid-February 2014*
work hours: Monday – Friday from 7am-7pm
note: some weekend work may be required

description of work:

  • install fence and traffic control barriers around work zone
  • excavate the work area
  • build the retaining wall
  • install oil grit separator
  • backfill and restore the area

Once the wall is built, the area will be restored and a handrail will be installed on the top of the retaining wall.

lane, sidewalk and bus stop closures [see map]

  • There will be temporary northbound and eastbound curb lane closures at the Jane Street & Highway 7 intersection.
  • In each direction, two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, however the dedicated northbound
  • right-turn lane on Jane Street will be reduced.
  • The southeast sidewalk on Jane Street will be closed around the work area. A pedestrian walkway will still be maintained along Jane Street northbound to Highway 7. Pedestrians looking to continue east on Highway 7 are asked to cross to the north side and follow directional signs.
  • Northbound bus stop #3804 on Jane Street has been relocated 50 metres south. Directional signs are on site to guide pedestrians to the relocated stop.
  • Access will be maintained to driveways in work areas.
  • Due to the nature of this work, at times there will be noise and vibration around the work area. Monitoring will be conducted to ensure all levels are kept within industry standards.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty officers will be on site as required.
