Archaeological work begins on Highway 7 West

August 17, 2011

What type of work is being done?

Archaeological assessments are being completed to meet the requirements of the Highway 7 Corridor (Yonge Street to Islington Avenue) Environmental Assessment.

Why is it being done?

In addition to meeting requirements of the Environmental Assessment, this work will ensure that if any important historical artifacts exist, they are identified before construction begins for widening Highway 7 for the rapidway.

Where is the work happening?

Work will be in approximately 40 locations on or near Highway 7, between Yonge Street and Islington Avenue.

When will the work start and finish?

Work will start on July 7, and pending weather, is scheduled to be complete by mid-August.

What does the work entail?

A series of holes, approximately one foot deep and one foot wide, will be dug and sifted by hand, and then filled in at each location.

What impact will there be?

There will be very little impact from the archaeological work. You may see workers on site, but traffic won’t be disrupted.
