installation of new hydro poles on Highway 7 West

March 02, 2017

On Monday, crews will begin the installation of 31 new 26-metre hydro poles along the north side of Highway 7 West, starting from Nova Star Drive to Aberdeen Avenue. Please see below for further details.westMap

work dates*: Starting Monday, March 6 and over the next few months.
work hours*:9am to 7pm

what you need to know:

  • Starting Monday, westbound Highway 7 will be reduced to two lanes between Nova Star Dr. and Aberdeen Ave.
  • A crane is used to hoist poles and put them into concrete foundations. During this operation, for intermittent short periods of time, westbound lanes will be reduced to one lane [between 9am–4pm].
  • As each new pole is hoisted up, over existing wires and placed on its foundation, westbound and eastbound Highway 7 traffic in this area will be stopped in all directions for 10-15 minutes at a time [between 9am–4pm].
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be on site to direct traffic as required.
  • Where sidewalks are closed around work areas to accommodate this work, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open sidewalk.
  • The bus stop on the northeast corner of Nova Star and Highway 7 will be temporarily relocated to just west of Weston Rd during this work. Follow directional signs.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
  • Delivery and installation of the new hydro poles will continue over the next few months. We will continue to communicate details as work progresses.

stages of hydro pole installation:

  • First, concrete foundations are installed for each new pole location.
  • Then, new poles are delivered and installation continues over a few months.
  • Each pole is about 26 metres long and weighs approximately 8 tonnes.
  • Traffic has to be stopped for a short period of time in all directions while each pole is hoisted over existing power lines. It is then lowered onto concrete foundations.
  • Check out this video [of the vivaNext project on Yonge Street in Newmarket] for a look at how it’s done.
  • Finally, service will be transferred to the new poles. The old poles will be removed and the holes will be backfilled.
*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible.
We understand that construction can be disruptive and we thank you in advance for your patience during this time. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
