overnight tonight >> traffic shift on Centre Street and traffic signal activation at the Bathurst connector road

August 28, 2017

Hello,

Tonight, in order to accommodate future road widening and storm sewer work on the south side of Centre Street, there will be a traffic shift tonight from west of New Westminster Drive to Dufferin Street. Lanes will be shifted to the north side of the street. In addition crews will be activating the temporary traffic signals at the Highway 7 and connector road intersection. Please see below for further details.

traffic shift on Centre Street

work dates*: Monday. Aug. 28 [overnight]
work hours*: 8pm–6am

  • In preparation for future road widening, crews will be shifting both eastbound and westbound lanes on Centre Street toward the north side of the street, from west of New Westminster to Dufferin.
  • This lane shift will be in place for several months.
  • At 8pm tonight, Centre St. will be reduced to one lane in each direction both eastbound and westbound in order for crews to remove old traffic lines and paint new ones.
  • Next, the newly painted lanes will reopen and the remaining lanes will be closed to obliterate old lanes and paint new ones.
  • Early Tuesday morning weather permitting, lanes will reopen shifted to the north with two lanes eastbound and two lanes westbound.
  • Wherever possible, sidewalks and bus stops will remain open. If a bus stop or sidewalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.

Highway 7 and the connector road activation

work dates*: Monday. Aug. 28 [overnight]
work hours*: 12am[midnight]–4am

  • Overnight tonight, at the Highway 7 and Bathurst connector road intersection, the temporary traffic signals that will be in place throughout construction are scheduled to be activated.
  • The traffic lights will be out of service intermittently, in all directions. Expect to see the lights out or flashing.
  • Once activated, crews will return at a later date to remove the old signal poles and equipment.
  • This work may require short-term lane closures around each work area as crews make their way around the intersection.
  • Paid duty police officers will be onsite for the duration of the work to control traffic.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

crews dedicated to minimize disruption where possible:

  • Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper.
  • Aim headlights away from buildings and homes.
  • Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates.
  • Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings.
  • Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible. Check twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.

We understand that overnight work is disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible. While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable. Read more about how we balance the needs of the corridor in our recent blog working day and night. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
