what you need to know

  • For the next week and a half, crews will be excavating and installing the foundations for the new hydro poles along the west side of Bathurst between Worth Blvd. and Centre St.
  • While the majority of work will be taking place within the boulevard area off the road, there may be occasional rolling curb lane closures around the work area.
  • Crews will be moving back and forth along the corridor to complete this work.
  • Bus stops and sidewalks will remain open where possible. If a bus stop or sidewalk is closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
  • Installation of the new hydro poles will continue over the next few months. We will communicate more details very soon!

stages of hydro pole installation:

  • First, concrete foundations are installed for each new pole location.
  • Then, new poles are delivered and installation continues over a few months.
  • Each pole is about 26 metres long and weighs approximately 8 tonnes.
  • raffic has to be stopped for a short period of time in all directions while each pole is hoisted high in the air over the existing power lines by a large crane. It is then carefully lowered onto concrete foundations. Check out this video [of the vivaNext project on Yonge Street in Newmarket] for a look at how it’s done.
  • Finally, service will be transferred to the new poles. The old poles will be removed and the holes will be backfilled.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible.
