Bathurst Street water main replacement

June 23, 2016

Starting Monday, crews will begin replacing an existing water main along Bathurst Street from Centre Street to just north of the Highway 7 connector ramp. The existing water main is approaching the end of its lifespan and will be upgraded with new infrastructure as part of the vivaNext rapidway project in the Bathurst & Centre area. Please see below for further details:

work dates*: Starting Monday, June 27 until the end of this year
work hours: 7am–7pm

description of the work:

  • For approximately three months, crews will be drilling along Bathurst, from Centre to the Highway 7 connector ramp.
  • The new water main will be installed using directional drilling, a tunneling technique that minimizes disruption and excavation.
  • While the drilling continues, a second crew will follow to dig trenches for valve and chamber installation.
  • This work will progress in segments for the duration of the work.
  • Generally, work will move northbound; however, crews will be required at times to move back and forth through the corridor to complete different tasks associated with the overall work.
  • Once drilling and installations are complete, crews will connect water services to the new water main and conduct residual water testing.
  • Trenches will then be filled and the road and boulevard will be restored.

what you need to know:

  • There has been extensive planning and work activity in order to maintain two lanes of traffic in both directions, as much as possible, for the duration of this work.
  • In a few cases, the work will require curb lane closures for northbound traffic around the work areas when crews are pulling pipe through the excavated areas. Details will be communicated closer to when the work takes place.
  • Traffic control staff and paid duty police officers will be onsite, as required.
  • Efforts have been made to keep sidewalks open wherever possible. If a sidewalk is closed, directional signage will be onsite to help guide pedestrians.
  • Transit will continue service on Bathurst and Centre during this activity.
  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated or closed as work progresses. Where bus stops are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop.
  • Access will be maintained to properties in work areas; however, driveways may be reduced or temporarily disrupted. Advance notice will be provided wherever possible.
  • Due to the nature of this work, at times, there will be construction-related noise, dust and vibration disturbances from equipment and trucks.
  • There may be some noise prior to 7am as crews assemble and arrange the equipment they require.
  • Planned short-term water service interruptions will occur closer to the end of the work and advance notice will be given to impacted businesses and residences.
  • Some overnight and/or weekend work may be required.

*Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other variables. We’ll provide advance notice whenever possible. When work progresses according to schedule, construction crews typically work from 7am–5pm. If additional time is required, crews will work until 7pm unless otherwise noted.

We understand that construction can be disruptive and we thank you for your patience as we transform Bathurst & Centre. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
