environmental sampling work continues on Davis Drive

January 9, 2017

As part of the vivaNext rapidway project’s environmental program, crews are continuing water and soil sampling on Davis Drive, from west of Yonge Street to Huron Heights Drive/Alexander Road. Before rapidway construction began on Davis, crews conducted environmental testing. Now that the rapidway is completed, crews are taking additional samples to verify that the environmental requirements of the project have been met. Ensuring that the project has left the corridor in an environmentally responsible condition is a top priority for vivaNext. Please see below for details on this work:

work dates*: Tuesday, Jan. 10 to end of April
work hours*: 9:30am–3:30pm

where is the work happening?

Water and soil samples are being taken from 76 locations on Davis, from just west of Yonge Street to Huron Heights Drive/Alexander Road.

what does the work entail?

A series of bore holes will be dug by a small drill rig. Monitoring wells will be placed inside of the holes to collect water and soil samples. These samples will then be tested to determine their properties. While the monitoring wells are in place, crews will temporarily restore the area to ensure that it is flush with the sidewalk or boulevard. Crews will later return to each location to remove the monitoring well and permanently restore each area. In areas where paver stones have been removed from the sidewalk, crews will tag each stone upon removal and return to its original location.

what impact will there be?

Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the monitoring efforts. Throughout the month of December, short term lane and sidewalk closures were not required. Now that crews have returned, short term lane closures will be required along Davis to accommodate this work and at times crews may close a small portion of the sidewalk. If a sidewalk does need to be temporarily closed, signage will be in place to guide pedestrians around the closure.
