We’re counting down to the vivaNext rapidway opening this December on Davis Drive. By the end of the year, Viva service will be running in dedicated centre lanes on Davis from Yonge Street to Roxborough Road, allowing buses to avoid congestion and maintain fast travel times. East of Roxborough, rapid transit service will continue in mixed traffic to Highway 404.

There’s a flurry of construction activity on Davis. Crews are busy road widening, paving and installing pedestrian-friendly sidewalks. The vivastations at Longford/Parkside, Main and Southlake Regional Health Centre are progressing right on schedule and curbside stations at Leslie and Huron Heights will be open with the rapidway at the end of the year. Crews are maximizing every opportunity to get things done as quickly as possible.

Dedicated centre lanes for Viva buses are the essence of rapidway travel and the centerpiece of the Davis rapidway project. Earlier this month, crews began building the dedicated bus lanes in the centre of Davis Drive from west of Yonge Street to Barbara Road. Crews will complete the bus lanes in segments, continuing to move east towards Roxborough Road. Work in the centre bus lanes is expected to continue until December.

Work description and impacts:

• Crews will be excavating, building medians and curbs, installing planter boxes and paving the centre bus lanes with base-layer asphalt
• To ensure workers have enough room to safely build the centre bus lanes, at times, there will be lane closures in place
• Later, the rapidway will be paved with a final coat of red asphalt to distinguish the dedicated bus-only lanes from vehicle lanes

The rapidway is taking shape, and when the project’s done, Davis will be served by fast, convenient rapid transit that makes it easier for people to travel within Newmarket and York Region. Davis will be a revitalized urban destination, with welcoming public areas and attractive streetscaping that people will enjoy for years to come.
