from messy to marvelous – davis drive year in review

December 19, 2014

As another year comes to a close, we wanted to provide you with an update on the Davis Drive rapidway project, including the progress made this year and a look ahead to upcoming winter work.

check out the progress

  • Construction of the east and westbound platforms for the Longford/Parkside vivastation is well underway. The steel canopy structures have been installed and the glass panels will be put in place this winter
  • Construction of the vivastations at Main and Southlake Hospital have also started
  • Road widening and base-laying paving was done from Main Street to KFC [north side], Yonge Street to just west of Longford Drive [north side] and from just east of Parkside Drive to Niagara Street [south side]
  • The structure of the Keith Bridge has been completed
  • The Tom Taylor Trail has been reinstated back to its original location under the Keith Bridge
  • The Union Hotel moved to its final location

  • Traffic movements between Yonge and Roxborough are slowly changing to get ready for construction to start in the centre of the road. Once these permanent changes take place:
    • There will be a dedicated left-turn lane at every signalized intersection
    • To access mid-block entrances on the other side of the road, motorists can make U-turns at signaled intersections when the left-turn signal is shown. Watch for signs that state “U-turn permitted”
    • In the final configuration, at the intersections with vivastations on Davis [Yonge, Longford/Parkside, Main and Southlake Hospital], pedestrians may cross Davis in two stages if unable to get to the other side during the first signal
    • Yonge, George and Barbara were the first intersections to be shifted into the final permanent condition

what’s to come

Building on our successes, we will keep the progress moving even as the cold wind blows. This winter;

  • Crews will carry on with the installation of storm and sanitary sewer and underground ductbank [a structure which gathers together and encases telecommunication wires] in locations along Davis
  • Construction of the vivastations at Longford/Parkside, Main and Southlake will also continue
  • One sidewalk on the north or south side of Davis between Yonge and Roxborough will always remain open over the winter. Please watch for directional signs that will guide you to the nearest open sidewalk and remember to cross safely at signalized intersections
