Preserving Newmarket’s history – Relocating the Union Hotel

April 23, 2013

To allow Davis Drive to be widened for the vivaNext rapidway, the Union Hotel, located on the northeast corner of Davis Drive and Main Street will be moved from its current location to preserve its reflection of Newmarket’s rich history.

Dates: Starting Wednesday, April 24, for approximately 6 months*

Work hours: 7am-6pm

Work details:

In two stages crews will lift the Union Hotel and it’s neighbouring building and set them
back from the road on the current property:

Stage 1:

  • Crews will begin with the demolition of the “non-historic” building components [the addition at the back of the buildings and the connection between the buildings]
  • The buildings will be excavated and lifted off their foundations
  • They will be placed on steel girders and moved to a temporary location at the back of the property
  • The old basements and foundations will be removed and backfilled

Stage 2:

  • New foundations will be built
  • The buildings will then be moved onto their new foundations
  • The property will be restored
Impacts:
  • There may be short-term dust, noise disturbances and intermittent vibration associated  with this work
  • Heavy truck traffic will be present at times
Lane closures, sidewalk and bus stop information:
  • Temporary lane closures may be required, we will provide as much notice as possible
  • When sidewalk closures are necessary, directional signage will be in place
  • Bus stops will not be affected
  • As required, a paid duty officer will be on site to direct traffic
