Overnight construction on Main St.

November 06, 2011

As part of vivaNext rapid transit construction, many utilities will need to be relocated. On November 8, Main Street South will be temporarily closed for one night, between Simcoe Street and Davis Drive, for underground utility investigations.

When will the work take place?

All traffic lanes on Main Street will be closed overnight, from 10pm on November 8, until 6am the next morning. (see diagram below)

Description of work?

  • Approximately five metres south of Davis Drive on Main Street, the roadway will be excavated using a large hydrovac truck (truck-mounted vacuum).
  • The trench will be approximately 2-3 metres deep, and will help determine the depth and exact location of buried utilities.
  • Once work is completed the area will be backfilled and resurfaced with asphalt.
  • There will be noise from the sound of the equipment; however, work will be completed as quickly as possible to minimize any inconvenience.

How will traffic be redirected?

  • Detour signs will direct traffic along Simcoe Street westbound to Niagara Street or eastbound to Superior Street.
  • Sidewalks will remain open, and any construction areas will be fenced and directional signs will be posted if required.
  • Emergency services, transit and local businesses will be informed in advance of the road closure.

Work is weather-dependent, and if required, may be moved to the next day.
