Retaining wall construction begins

March 18, 2011

Rapidway construction is well underway. We will now build six retaining walls to allow for utility relocations and the main road construction phase which is scheduled to start in late 2011.

When will this start?

Crews will begin mobilizing on the work sites the week of March 21, 2011.

Where will the work take place?

Approx. 3 months of retaining wall construction at 20, 54 and 350 Davis Dr., and 6 weeks of grading and paving at 180 Davis Dr. Work hours are Mon-Fri, 7am-7pm.

Description of work:

The walls being constructed at 20, 54 and 350 Davis Drive are approximately 1 metre in height (maximum). Work will include:

  • setting up equipment on site;
  • preparing the work area by clearing plants and grass;
  • removing the existing asphalt and curb;
  • excavating the earth and then building the retaining wall.

Once the wall is built, the area will be restored and a handrail will be installed on the top of the retaining wall.

Will access to businesses be maintained?

Yes, access to each location will be maintained. All necessary signage to manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be in place.

Will the sidewalks in the work areas be impacted?

For the most part, the sidewalks will be kept open for pedestrians. However, an occasional short-term pedestrian detour may be required. When required, detour signs will direct pedestrians to the north side of Davis Drive.

Will there be traffic impacts on Davis Drive?

From time to time there may be temporary lane closures. Any lane closures will follow permit guidelines and roadways will be clearly signedand 350 Davis Drive to allow for the tree removals. In all work areas, the sidewalks will be open and a flag person will be on site to direct pedestrians.
