Preparation for construction continues

March 04, 2011

Starting March 7, crews will begin removing trees in designated work areas along the south side of Davis Drive between Yonge Street and Main Street. Trees are being removed in these areas in preparation for the construction of retaining walls. Davis Drive is being widened as part of a rapidway project that, once complete, will include attractive landscaping and double the amount of trees removed will be replanted.

Why are trees being removed along Davis Drive?

Trees near the roadway need to be removed to allow for building retaining walls, widening the roadway and relocating utilities.

How many trees are being removed?

Approximately 40 trees have been slated for removal before April 1, 2011. Approximately 300 trees will be removed at a later date as part of the next phase of construction. Once the rapidway project is complete, landscaping will include over 700 new trees double the amount of trees removed.

When are the trees being removed?

Trees will be removed between March 7 and March 18.

Where are trees being removed from?

Trees are being removed in front of these addresses:

In front of 20, 54, 130, 200, 270, 280, and 350 Davis Drive; 26 Lorne Avenue; and 16-18 Main Street

What are the trees being replaced with?

Once the rapidway is built, Davis Drive will have attractive, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, with extensive landscaping including many types of deciduous trees, shrubs, groundcovers, ornamental grasses and perennial flowers.

Will there be other impacts to the area?

There will be temporary lane closures during off-peak hours in the eastbound curb lane at 270, 280 and 350 Davis Drive to allow for the tree removals. In all work areas, the sidewalks will be open and a flag person will be on site to direct pedestrians.
