pedestrian enhancements at Yonge and Major Mackenzie intersection

Over the next several weeks, crews will be installing a raised pedestrian walkway in the centre median from the northbound Major Mackenzie vivastation platform to the south crosswalk on Yonge Street, at Major Mackenzie Drive. These enhancements will give pedestrians another direct option to get to and from the Major Mackenzie vivastation or their destination. Please see below for more details.

Map of construction work areas

work dates*: Tuesday, August 31, for approximately five weeks
work hours*: 7am–5pm

what you need to know:

  • Crews will be installing a raised pedestrian walkway in the centre median from the northbound Major Mackenzie station platform to the south crosswalk on Yonge at Major Mackenzie.
  • To accommodate this work, northbound Yonge will be reduced to one lane through the work zone, during work hours. At times, there will also be a southbound curb lane closure on Yonge.
  • During work hours, left turns will not be permitted from Yonge to Major Mackenzie Drive west. Detour signs will be in place to guide you to your destination.
  • To accommodate this work, the dedicated northbound bike lane on Yonge will end just north of Elmwood Avenue and cyclists will merge into the curb lane. Please watch for advance signage in the area.
  • A marked pedestrian crosswalk will be provided between the Major Mackenzie northbound and southbound vivastation platforms.
  • A pedestrian push button will be installed in the centre median at the south crosswalk on Yonge at Major Mackenzie.
  • Bus stop #7319 on the southwest corner of Yonge and Major Mackenzie, and bus stop #7318 on the southeast corner will be relocated north of the intersection for the duration of work.
  • Sidewalks on Yonge will remain open, however, the south crosswalk on Yonge at Major Mackenzie will be temporarily closed during this work. Please follow directional signs to guide you around the closure.
  • Paid duty police officers and traffic control staff will be on site to direct traffic as required.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination.

Safety border

For your safety:

be alert.

  • Because construction equipment is moved around as work progresses, it's especially important for everyone—pedestrians, cyclists and drivers—to pay attention to their surroundings. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures or shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

be safe.

  • Do not walk into construction zones, remove signs or barricades. They're put in place for everyone's safety. Even when no workers are present, it's a hazardous area. Cross at designated crosswalks and follow posted signs. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.

slow down.

  • Reaction time may decrease when lanes are narrowed. To protect construction workers, pedestrians and yourself, it's crucial to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

safety is a shared responsibility.

  • Do not ignore safety warnings or put others at risk by moving pylons, signage or caution tape. Let's make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We will provide advance notice when possible. Watch twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates.
