final black + red paving >> on Yonge from Carrville/16th to Major Mackenzie

October 05, 2020

Overnight paving is well underway on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, with crews making good progress. The next phase of paving will take place over five nights. Every effort is made to schedule paving operations, however, it is heavily dependent on good, dry weather and specific temperatures. If the weather does not permit, paving operations will be postponed. Watch twitter.com/vivanext for last-minute updates, and vivanext.com/yongeimpacts for up-to-date information about road closures, overnight work and paving operations. Starting tonight, crews will be paving top black asphalt and red in the rapidways and intersections on Yonge from Carrville Road/16th Avenue to Major Mackenzie Drive. Please see below for further details.

what you need to know:

work dates*: Monday, October 5, - Saturday, October 10

  • Crews will pave in the following order:

    • Night four [Thursday night]: crews will pave red asphalt on the rapidway from Elmwood/Hopkins to Major Mackenzie and the Major Mackenzie intersection. Traffic on Major Mackenzie will be shifted and reduced to one lane eastbound and one lane westbound through the intersection and there will be intermittent closures on Major Mackenzie as the asphalt cools.

  • To accommodate this work, traffic lanes on Yonge will be shifted and reduced to one lane in each direction within the work areas. When approaching work areas, please slow down and follow posted signs.
  • At times, traffic will be diverted into the rapidway lanes and turning movements may be restricted.
  • While crews are paving, side streets within the work zones will be temporarily closed. Please follow detour signs that will guide you around the closures
  • Following each paving operation, traffic lines will be re-painted and lanes will be re-opened once the new asphalt and line painting has cooled.
  • Paid duty police officers will be onsite to direct traffic as required.
  • Wherever possible, bus stops, sidewalks and crosswalks will remain open. If a bus stop, sidewalk or crosswalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest available option.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

safety border

for your safety:

Be alert.

  • With construction site conditions changing daily, it's important for everyone to pay attention to their surroundings. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures or shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

Be safe.

  • Do not walk into construction zones or remove signs and barricades that are in place for everyone's safety. Even when no workers are present, it's a hazardous area. Cross at designated crosswalks, follow posted signs, and keep at a safe distance.

Slow down.

  • To protect construction workers, pedestrians and yourself, it's crucial to slow down, follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

Safety is a shared responsibility.

  • Do not ignore safety warnings or put others at risk by moving pylons, barricades or signage. Let's make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.

We understand that overnight work is disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible. While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable.

to minimize disruption where possible, crews will:
  • Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper.
  • Aim headlights away from buildings and homes.
  • Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates.
  • Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings.
  • Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We will provide advance notice when possible.
