red paving continues on Yonge >> Beresford to Observatory

September 24, 2020

Crews continue to make good progress with overnight paving on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill. Starting tonight, crews will be paving the rapidway and intersections with red asphalt on Yonge between Beresford Drive/Westwood Lane to just north of Baif Boulevard/Observatory Lane. Please see below for further details.

what you need to know:

work dates*: Thursday, September 24 - Saturday, September 26
work hours*: 7pm-7am [overnight]

  • Crews will pave in the following order:
    • Thursday overnight: crews will pave the rapidway lanes from Beresford/Westwood to just south of 16th Avenue/Carrville Road. Crews will also pave the Scott/Bantry and Northern Heights/Oak intersections. To accommodate this work, Scott and Northern Heights will experience short-term closures overnight.
    • Friday overnight: crews will pave the rapidway lanes from north of 16th/Carrville to north of Baif/Observatory. Crews will also pave the signalized intersection at Hillcrest [9350 Yonge] and South Hill Shopping Centre [9325 Yonge] and at Baif/Observatory. During this time, there will be short duration closures to those entrances and side streets.
  • To accommodate this work, traffic lanes on Yonge will be shifted and reduced to one lane in each direction within the work areas. When approaching work areas, please slow down and follow posted signs.
  • While crews are paving intersections, the side streets will experience intermittent closures. Please follow detour signs that will guide you around the closures.
  • Following each paving operation, traffic lines will be re-painted and lanes will be re-opened once the new asphalt and line painting has cooled.
  • Paid duty police officers will be onsite to direct traffic as required.
  • Wherever possible, bus stops, sidewalks and crosswalks will remain open. If a bus stop, sidewalk or crosswalk is temporarily closed, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest available option.
  • Paving is heavily dependent on good dry weather and specific temperatures. If the weather does not permit, paving operations will be postponed.
  • Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
  • Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.

safety border

for your safety:

Be alert.

  • With construction site conditions changing daily, it's important for everyone to pay attention to their surroundings. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures or shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

Be safe.

  • Do not walk into construction zones or remove signs and barricades that are in place for everyone's safety. Even when no workers are present, it's a hazardous area. Cross at designated crosswalks, follow posted signs, and keep at a safe distance.

Slow down.

  • To protect construction workers, pedestrians and yourself, it's crucial to slow down, follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

Safety is a shared responsibility.

  • Do not ignore safety warnings or put others at risk by moving pylons, barricades or signage. Let's make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.

We understand that overnight work is disruptive to those who live and work in the area, and have taken steps to reduce the impacts where possible. While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, night work is sometimes unavoidable.

to minimize disruption where possible, crews will:
  • Limit the reversing of vehicles with back-up safety beeper.
  • Aim headlights away from buildings and homes.
  • Reduce the banging noise from dump truck tailgates.
  • Set up portable lights in a way that limits upcasting onto buildings.
  • Ensure equipment is well maintained and running well.

*Please note: As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. We will provide advance notice when possible.
