Yonge subway: Did you know?

Posted Nov 1, 2009, 8:06 pm

The Yonge subway is Canada’s first subway line. When it officially opened on March 30, 1954, it extended from Union Station to Eglinton Station.

Over 600 guests were invited to ride on its inaugural run, which departed Eglinton Station at 11:56 a.m. and arrived at Union Station precisely fourteen minutes later at 12:10 p.m..

The new Yonge subway was more than twice as fast as the old Yonge streetcar it replaced, which took 30 minutes to travel the same distance.

In 1973, the Yonge subway was extended north to York Mills Station, and in 1974, to Finch Station. Now, as part of the vivaNext plan, it is proposed to extend north to the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7.

Government funding will help move this project forward and reach a much anticipated completion date of 2016.
